Security

At Union Savings Bank, we utilize and maintain a number of systems that access and control customer data within the bank. All of these systems have state of the art security that ensures a protected environment to safeguard the confidentiality of transactions and customer data. A Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) protocol is used to provide privacy for data that transfers across the internet.

SSL is an open protocol for securing data communication across computer networks that provides a secure channel for data transmission through its encryption capabilities.  It allows for the transfer of digitally signed certificates for authentication procedures, and provides message integrity, ensuring that the data can’t be altered en route.

The Bank is protected by a system of filtering routers and firewalls, which form a barrier between the outside Internet and the internal bank network.  The filtering routers verify the source and destination of each network data packet and determine whether or not to let the packet through.  Firewalls are used to shield the bank’s customer service network from the Internet.  Internet traffic must come through the firewall so that all inside addresses are protected from outside access and the structure of the bank’s internal networks is invisible to outside observers.

Strict internal procedures are in place within Union Savings Bank, controlling every aspect of bank administration including training employees and confirming customer transactions.  We work with a number of third-party data partners who also employ strict standards of security to ensure data integrity and safeguard all Union Savings Bank data.  Union Savings Bank and all our partners are constantly testing the integrity of security systems and upgrading these security systems as state-of-art changes occur

Employees of Union Savings Bank and our data partners are subject to background checks and adhere to a strict standard for safeguarding customer data that incorporates passwords, restricted access, secure email, shredding of sensitive data, logging of all user activity and ongoing access reviews.

Phishing is a term coined by hackers to describe forged e-mails they send that imitate a legitimate company's e-mails in order to entice people to share passwords, credit card numbers or other personal information. Hackers will use this data to access personal accounts, financial information and/or identities that they will then use for fraudulent purposes. Learn more about identifying and avoiding phishing attempts.

Spoofing is a term that describes Phishing that asks you to supply, confirm, or update personal information by clicking on a link in the email.  The link will connect to a web page or login that appears to belong to the company mentioned in the email.  Often the site looks like the company’s website, but it isn’t.  If a customer enters personal data, the hackers who set up the site will steal that information.

 Customers should know that:

  • Union Savings Bank will never ask you to send personal or financial information by email.
  • If you receive an email that you suspect is fraudulent, DO NOT RESPOND to the email, contact the bank immediately.
  • Passwords and access codes should be kept secret, and changed periodically.
  • When banking over the Internet, be sure to exit the browser after completing the Internet session, and take precautions to keep your computer free of viruses and spy ware that could be used to capture password keystrokes.
